What is NLP?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of what works in thinking, language and behaviour. It is the study of human excellence.

Neuro refers to the thinking patterns and how our brain functions.
Linguistic refers to language patterns
Programming is the automatic programs and unconscious habits we run on.

NLP is the study of all three, their interconnection, what that means and what we can do with it.

The NLP Coach

NLP is a positive approach to assist people reach their full potential by modelling strategies that work. Once you understand how you achieve the results you do in your life, work or business it is easier to change the inputs that lead to these outcomes ie behaviours, beliefs, values, associations etc. It is completely results orientated and the focus of any NLP coaching process is the future NOT the past. This is the fundamental difference between coaching and counselling.

NLP is based on several sound presuppositions:

  • That the mind and body are one connected life system. The body is simply a printout of what is happening in the mind and visa versa.
  • That the map is not the territory. Our senses take in raw data from our environment that has absolutely no meaning attached to it, until we distort, delete and generalise it and attach our own meanings to it. In other words there are no events, only the meanings we attach to these events.
  • That every behaviour serves a positive intention. Everyone is always doing what they believe is right, or the only choice available to them given the circumstances as they see it.
  • That every behaviour is useful in some context – no behaviour is wrong in itself, it is perhaps just not the most appropriate behaviour in context.
  • That there is no failure only feedback. All results are useful information in our quest for excellence.
  • That the person with the most flexibility and choices of behaviour will rule the system. In order to get different results you need to keep doing different things.
  • That if one human has done it, it is humanly possible and by modelling there is no limit to our potential.
  • That all genius, excellence and amazing achievement has a structure and strategy and for this reason it can be learned.
  • That we create our own experience and therefore we are responsible for what happens to us.
  • That beliefs are more important than facts. If you believe you cannot do something you are generally right. These beliefs are stored in our sub-conscious.
  • That we teach people how to treat us

The NLP coaching process is about the coach understanding the client’s map in order to show how the individual is getting results. Only when we understand the how can we consider other choices.

As the coaching process progresses we may have to deal with limiting beliefs, conflicting values, negative behaviour patterns, addictions, phobias, lack of direction and so on. NLP has a range of tools and techniques to help alter neuro associations and replace negative thought patterns. It is a future paced, positive and empowering process aimed at anyone who wants to improve their performance or simply lead a better life.
